Elmer’s Glue. Troll or Cow

May 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

I was just talking to a co-worker about play doh, and we got onto the topic of eating glue as children and how we both never did it. My reasoning, it’s gross. His reasoning, he thought if he used to much glue “the elmers glue troll would come after him.” I unfortunately had to inform him, that Elmer’s glue mascot was a cow. I can’t believe going through life for 22 years thinking the Elmer’s mascot was a troll. Anyway here’s some nostalgia for the morning.

Mended Spiderwebs by Nina Katchadourian

May 15, 2008 · No Comments

What Nina has to say about the series:

The Mended Spiderweb series came about during a six-week period in June and July in 1998 which I spent on Pörtö. In the forest and around the house where I was living, I searched for broken spiderwebs which I repaired using red sewing thread. All of the patches were made by inserting segments one at a time directly into the web. Sometimes the thread was starched, which made it stiffer and easier to work with. The short threads were held in place by the stickiness of the spider web itself; longer threads were reinforced by dipping the tips into white glue. I fixed the holes in the web until it was fully repaired, or until it could no longer bear the weight of the thread. In the process, I often caused further damage when the tweezers got tangled in the web or when my hands brushed up against it by accident.

The morning after the first patch job, I discovered a pile of red threads lying on the ground below the web. At first I assumed the wind had blown them out; on closer inspection it became clear that the spider had repaired the web to perfect condition using its own methods, throwing the threads out in the process. My repairs were always rejected by the spider and discarded, usually during the course of the night, even in webs which looked abandoned. The larger, more complicated patches where the threads were held together with glue often retained their form after being thrown out, although in a somewhat “wilted” condition without the rest of the web to suspend and stretch them. Each “Rejected Patch” is shown next to the photograph showing the web with the patch as it looked on site.

I also highly recommend checking out her maps series on her website. I really really like it.

Napping and Hugging

May 9, 2008 · 1 Comment

I bought that for Alicia. She likes it. I like it too.
It was made in China. You could own one too, if you go
to cracker barrel. I'm tired of making pictures. I can
never stop myself. I thought of an idea. It won't work.
Think of another that one will not work either. It's
pretty much this never ending cycle of inadequacy mixed
with fear. Lame. I feel too busy. Later today I am
going to go home and put icy hot all over my body.
Then I will eat. Then I will attempt to not consume
liquor although it's debatable. If it were sunny I'd go
for a walk. It's raining so I probably won't. I'll try
to get my girlfriend to nap with me, but she has been
napping all day and by the time I get there she will be
stir crazy. That will make me sad because I am tired,
and I would like to lay down. Things like this are also
patterns. I started drinking more coffee, and I started
getting more tired. That makes no sense. I'd really
like a nap. Or a hug. Or napping while hugging.

Also I looked up on google images "napping hugging" and
I found this picture of Jesus.

Antique Maps in Canton

May 8, 2008 · 1 Comment

I love antique maps. They are so versatile. A nice thing to collect. They look good on any wall. They are informative and strikingly beautiful. Best of all, they aren’t very expensive. I was browsing the internet and I came across the website for Canton Gallery. It’s a gallery that’s located in Baltimore that is currently  exhibiting the East Baltimore folk art of screen painting in both traditional and contemporary styles. Featured is the work of Jenny Campbell…from dresses to corsets to regular window screens.

Aside from that I noticed they had a section on their website of Antique Maps. For sale. All original prints. Here are some of the photos and I also included one of my own, of my favorite map that is currently hanging in my kitchen.

Heres my map. And my bike. And my fridge.

Miranda July - Getting Stronger Every Day

May 7, 2008 · No Comments

This is an interesting short film by Miranda July.

“There are two movies I saw on TV about boys who were taken from their families and then returned to them years later. One boy was on a fun spaceship for years and the other boy was kidnapped and molested. These boys were never the same again and they just couldn’t re-integrate into the family. I saw these movies when I was little. I’ve often described them to people, always paired together. They are sort of the comedy and tragedy version of the same story and it is a mundanely spiritual story. Getting Stronger Every Day includes these boys’ tales, but they are like mystical objects placed on the living reality of the man storyteller. In other parts of the movie actual mystical objects hover in peoples lives without a myth or story attached. I like to think about how these dimensions interact simply and can be enacted: real life / story / worldly / spirit / video / flat drawing.”

I snapped this photo awhile ago on N. Central street while walking to work. I saw this van again a few weeks later, the sign was still up. I think it’s really hilarious.

DB5K Gallery + “Foundations of Style Writing”

“Foundations of Style Writing” (Curated by Adam Stab) opened May 2, 2008 at DB5K gallery

Curated by Adam Stab, the show will feature work from:
AREK, ARON, BASER, BRAKES, CUBA, CURVE, CISE, CENSE, DETR, DAVER, EVER, FISHER, HENSE, GOST2, JASE, JESER, KUZEN, KASTER, KYLE, KAR, MASK, NEEK, SB, SIEK, SMOKE, SEST, SMK, SCAR, SEVER, STAB, ROBOTS, RIBS, REVOLT, RUSH, TACO, VANDEL, YUCKO, ZE, AXE, ACHES, CAP, CAVSTER, CERO, CLEAR, DR.DAKS, DIZO, GSOUTH, EYE, KVEE, JUNER, MUCHO, MBER, SIEN5, SPELLO, SKUPE3, SAVE, SAEL, SINCE, TRACY168, VISM, PULSE, HARSH, SMASH74, DYER, CRUDE-OIL, AL X, MARTHA, COOPER, ROGER GASTMAN, WIVES, ZEPHYR, VESPA, PINK, STAK, INTEL, HEAR, CON, AEST, and many others.

Funny enough last night while at my sort of weekly trip to the Ottobar for cheap drinks and good music. I noticed the “Stab” tag on every step going to the upstairs. After my few drinks I was heading down stairs and noticed someone taking a photograph of it. I am not super familiar with graffiti and tagging in particular. I respect it. I’ve always liked the idea of freight train graffiti and I just read an article about Adam Stab (who curated the DB5K show) and now I know much more about his thought process, and I was pleasantly surprised to read that he also partakes in the whole freight train graffiti.

Anyway, perhaps I’ll check out this show. Maybe.
