On Monday me and my girlfriend and a friend went to see the Body Worlds exhibit. I saw BODIES the exhibit last year, and was simultaneously terrified and amazed at the same time. Then early this year I found out that the bodies that were used in the BODIES exhibit were actually bodies of Chinese prisoners who never consented to having their body plastinized and used in a traveling exhibit. I felt even more terrified and terrible for even giving a company my money that used innocent people without their consent.

Body Worlds is different. Every body used has been donated for this cause. The exhibit itself was mediocre. I mean I loved seeing everything. I think that the venue (Maryland Science Center) was not the best place for me to see the exhibit. For quite a few reasons, first, the display cases are all smudged with hand prints and finger prints as well as a lot of visible dust. And secondly I was looking at slices of someones liver inside of a display case, and what do I see inside of the case? A piece of hair! A big piece of hair. It totally grossed me out, and I think the science center needs a more rigorous and consistent upkeep when an exhibit as delicate and important as body worlds is being housed there.

Also, they have interesting section of the exhibit where they have tiny fetuses (from 2 week to 14 weeks I believe) inside jars. You can’t see anything really. Until the last jar where you can vaguely see a small small small fetus. Anyway, my point was while I was looking at this particular portion of the exhibit I just happened to be next to what looked like an overly Christian woman, who was certainly pro-choice. She had so many comments to make. And it sort of annoyed me. When she was looking at the 2 week jar, she was commenting on how the child already had developed fingernails or something on that level, and how it’s a shame that people can just get ride of life so simply. It just seemed like the wrong forum to be voicing such opinions. And so loudly. Thanks for ruining my experience of the fetus room, lady.

Oh my other favorite part of the exhibit was reading the comments book at the end. I saw a lot of people commenting that “Our God is an Awesome God.” And other comments that stated “Don’t ever say we have evolved look at what God has created.” The comment book was super religious and creepy to me. Body Worlds does not seem to be intended as a religious spiritual exhibit, but I guess a lot of people are taking it that way. Regardless, the human body is creepy, and amazing. And if you want to see some absolutely weird things check out the exhibit.
