Manda Bala

2008 April 24

I just want everyone to know about an engrossing and stimulating film called Manda Bala. It’s a documentary that explores class warfare and corruption in Brazil. It’s heartbreaking at times. And it’s very interesting to me considering my knowledge of Brazil and Sao Paulo in general. I have heard of the kidnappings before (they happen daily, mostly to wealthy Brazilians) But recently I have been reading of the dramatic homicide drop in Sao Paulo, which is excellent news. The annual murder tally for Sao Paulo state has plummeted from 12,800 in 1999 to 4,800 last year, a turnaround comparable to that of New York and Bogota, two cities famous for their successful policing programs.

The trailer for Manda Bala is below, and I highly recommend watching this documentary.
