TOXIC — Garbage Island

June 10, 2008 · 1 Comment

I read about this awhile ago and just found a documentary on it today. As soon as I read about it in a magazine awhile ago I tried to google it, but did not find much information or pictures. This is definitely something I would recommend taking a look at.

ABOUT GARBAGE ISLAND

For years we’ve been reading about a patch of garbage the size of Texas floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, ingeniously dubbed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Basically, any trash that gets dumped in the water rides the currents to this one spot and joins an ever-increasing flotilla of crap. For all the breathless accounts of the mess and its impact on the area’s sealife, however, no one seemed to have a picture of the buildup.

Interesting Design Concept - The Aperture Shower Head

June 6, 2008 · 1 Comment

The Aperture Shower Head is an interesting design catering to the greenifying of the world. If I lived in a super modern home with all amazing fixtures I wouldn’t be opposed to having this large dark shower head telling me how much I’m wasting I suppose.

The Aperture Shower Head is a design concept whose main idea is to show you how much water you’re wasting in hopes of getting you out of that shower as soon as possible. Using the force of the water to generate its own hydroelectric power, its LEDs pour on the guilt as you get clean. If it can deliver a powerful-enough stream, it might be worth the worry.

Elmer’s Glue. Troll or Cow

May 16, 2008 · 5 Comments

I was just talking to a co-worker about play doh, and we got onto the topic of eating glue as children and how we both never did it. My reasoning, it’s gross. His reasoning, he thought if he used to much glue “the elmers glue troll would come after him.” I unfortunately had to inform him, that Elmer’s glue mascot was a cow. I can’t believe going through life for 22 years thinking the Elmer’s mascot was a troll. Anyway here’s some nostalgia for the morning.

Jacqueline Schlossman - Golf Courses

May 6, 2008 · 3 Comments

Earlier today I was browsing through some art blogs. And I was reading a posting about the Maryland Art Place Critics Pick show. The work looked fantastic and I was very taken aback by the photographs by Jacqueline Schlossman. The work was beautiful. They were large prints mounted to aluminum. The subject matter is golf courses which seems to be an interesting way of opening up a conversation on social status and success especially when the sport of golfing was the pinnacle of corporate success in the 1980’s and 90’s. I highly suggest going to her website and perusing the images she has to offer. Very very good work. And she teaches at MICA so I’m sure someone I know has taken a class with her.

Digital Pinhole Camera

March 18, 2008 · No Comments

Last night Alicia and I were watching “Waking Life” and drinking copious amounts of wine and I had an idea that I wasn’t sure would work or not. I wanted to attempt to use my D-SLR as a pinhole camera. I scoured around my bookshelves for a lenscap that I could poke a hole through.

pinhole

I found one and started pushing my sewing needle through, it took about the duration of the movie to even make a budge because of course I picked a think plastic lens cap. Then just as we were making progress I found a thin plastic lens cap and poked a whole through in about 2 seconds.

I removed my cameras lens and taped this lens cap over the area, and set up exposure times etc to test out. I was surprised to find out it actually worked! Alicia and I spent the remainder of the night playing with camera. It was pretty awesome, sort of like discovering photography for the first time and dealing with all the trials and tribulations that go with it. I’d say it was a pretty awesome night.

And here was the outcome, 30 second exposure using self timer:
